People threw coins when Rajini first appeared on screen, and oh wow the shrills and the dance, and the ripped tickets and papers that were thrown during ‘rakkamma kaiya thattu’ song, it truly felt like Diwali inside the theater.

I enjoyed the shrieks and the show put out by the fans more than the actual movie itself from where I was seated (‘cabin seats’ – those first class special seats, near the projector room). The cut-outs, paal abhishekam was just a new tradition back then(not as crazy as these days). Man even today, the sound, the whistle and the cheer of the crowd, men running around wild in the theater with their shirt in hand is still fresh in my mind- feels like yesterday. My uncles, cousins all got on my thatha’s Matador Van, and my uncle managed to get tickets in the ‘black’. We had quite a few Thalaivar fans in our family including myself, so my uncle spur of the moment, decided to take us for a late night show(after we returned at 2 in the night, we had a little diwali from my grandparents too :-)). I remembered very little of the story-line until I re-watched it on VHS as an adult, but let me tell you, as a kid I was truly amazed by the breathtaking spectacle, the grandeur of the movie and the soaring background score.ġ991, Diwali release- Thalaivar’s Thalapathi! It was a tradition to gather up at my grandparent’s house for Diwali, and for new releases we need to drive to the neighboring town, Theni. I still remember the smell of the theater, the ‘panju mittai’ that he got me during the ‘interval’.Ī kid not having exposure to the world of cinema, let alone hollywood movies, I could not make much sense of the extravagance of Ben-hur, but I still remember the running commentary my grandfather gave about Ben-Hur throughout the car ride: “look for the 5000+ extras, do you know they used hundreds of horses, and real battleships to enact the sea battle between Romans and Macedonians, it will take many many years for a Tamil movie to showcase such extravagance” raved my grandfather. He took me to Madurai, an hour and half long drive, to watch Ben-hur on the big screen.

“Ben-hur and Mackenna’s Gold are the best English movies to watch”, he would say. My grandfather, a very charismatic man, was a thriving businessman and a great conversationalist and spoke about Hollywood movies.

It was 1987 summer holidays when I visited my grandparent’s house in a small town near Madurai.
